The construction of Highway 16 and the Canadian National Railway (CN Rail) cut off two relatively large channels (known as the Exchamsiks Backchannel area) from the Skeena River mainstem, downstream of Terrace, BC. Since 2006, there have been numerous funding and operational collaborations to restore access to and improve habitat quality in the area. One of those projects was the installation of the Exchamsiks fish ladder and a culvert under the highway and CN Rail line to provide fish access to the Exchamsiks Backchannel area.
