GIS Modelling of Fish Habitat and Road Crossings for the Prioritization of Culvert Assessment and Remediation

In British Columbia, culverted stream crossings in fish habitats often create barriers to fish passage. To address this issue, The Fish Passage Technical Working Group uses GIS analysis to locate culverted stream crossings in fish habitats and uses such data to inform efforts in prioritizing road/stream crossings for assessment and remediation. Potential culvert locations on modelled fish habitat with associated Habitat Gained Index (HGI) values were provided to contractors conducting field assessments in the 2010 season and were confirmed as a valuable planning tool.
