Copper River Watershed Restoration Program: 3 km off-channel construction

One project aim was the improvement of fish habitat. The site is located adjacent to the Copper River forest services road, between km 2 and 3, approximately 10 km east of Terrace. Impacts of floods and sediments inputs have caused substantial channel changes in floodplain reaches, damaging (industrial) infrastructure. Road and pipeline construction and protective dyking reduced access to and abundance of off-channel rearing and overwintering habitat for coho salmon. Channel excavation was conducted with the aim to establish fish habitat within an ephemeral run off-channel. Multiple ponds were excavated.
